On 20th March 2016, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, officiated during Orthros and conducted the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Alexandria, concelebrating with His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Gabriel of Leontopolis, Patriarchal Vicar General and His Grace Meletios Bishop of Naucratis, Abbot of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St Savvas in Alexandria.
Immediately thereafter the procession of the Icons took place within the Church together with the established memorial service for the repose of the souls of the late Chairmen, Great Benefactors and Members of the Hellenic Community of Alexandria. Present at the Eucharistic gathering were the Honourable Consul General of Greece in Alexandria Mr. Emm. Kakavelakis, the Chairman of the Hellenic Community Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos, Chairmen of Community organizations and societies and many faithful.
During the sermon, His Beatitude spoke with passionate enthusiasm to faithful on the meaning of Orthodoxy and orthopraxy in the life of Christians, highlighting that the present year is the “year of the Glory of Orthodoxy”, because after so many centuries the Holy and Great Synod of our Orthodox Church will be convened.
In conclusion he referred to the concern and the tireless efforts made by the Patriarchate of Alexandria to appease the Light of Christ on the African Continent, healing the spiritual pursuits, and at the same time the material needs of our African brothers and sisters “who seek the Lord”.
