On Sunday, December 8, 2019, with the blessing of His Eminence Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon, the first Divine Liturgy, after its renovation, took place in the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior and Saint Cosmas the Aetolian in the City of Nkayi, the fourth most populous city in the Republic of the Congo – Brazzaville. The Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by the Reverend Protopresbyter Fr. Maximos Oumba, the General Hierarchal Vicar of the Holy Metropolis, who also gave a sermon, as well as by the Reverend Protopresbyter Fr. Pavlos Diafouka and Fr. Iakovos Ntsoumou-Miayokela, members of the Metropolitan Council of the Local Church. The Divine Liturgy was also prayerfully attended by the member of Parliament, His Excellency Mr. Gaston Mampassi, Mayor of Nkayi, who gave praise to the Orthodox Community of the city.
The church, founded in 2007 by the late Metropolitan of Pentapolis Ignatius (Mandelides), the then Metropolitan of Central Africa, remained unfinished since 2010 due to a lack of financial resources. The funds to complete the work, which began with the initiative of His Eminence Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Brazzaville and Gabon, on Monday, June 3rd 2019, were donated by the Brotherhood of the Orthodox Foreign Missionary of Thessaloniki, while the expense of the erection of the bell-tower was covered by the Holy Archbishopric of Canada. The Panhellenic Holy Institute “Evangelistria” of Tinos and the Missionary Association of Thessaloniki "Agios Kosmas Aitolos" also contributed to the decoration of the surrounding area, the office of the Parish Priest and the ablution blocks. The work was completed by the construction company, ZEROCK S.A.R.L. which is owned by the pious Lebanese orthodox christian, Mr. Rawad Habib, a major donor of the Holy Metropolis of Congo-Brazzaville.
