Churches around South Africa celebrate the Feast of The Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross
Cathedral of Saint George – Cape Town
On Sunday 14 September His Eminence Archbishop Sergios, Metropolitanof Good Hope, officiated at the Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross at the Cathedral of Saint George the Great Martyr in Cape Town. He was assisted by Reverend Father Nikolaos Giamouridis and Father Deacon Michael Simos. The Liturgy concluded with a special service for the feast, in which the Cross was brought
out in procession and was venerated, together with special prayers.
In his address after the service, His Eminence said that the Cross represents Jesus’ victory over sin and death, since it is believed that through his death and resurrection he conquered death itself. Before Christ, the Cross was a symbol of punishment but after the crucifixion of Christ the Cross has become a means to salvation.
His Eminence said that it is through the Cross that the clergy give blessings and that as Christians we also have the opportunity to use the power of the Cross in our daily lives. He ended by congratulating those who celebrate their name day on this day and mentioned in
particular Stavros Simos, who has been a psaltis at the Cathedral for many years. His Eminence expressed his hope that the way of the Cross will protect them and guide them in their daily lives.
