"Today we visited Kroo Bay. I am really struggling to know what to write here, because never had I ever imagined I’d be witnessing these levels of poverty and desperation first hand- I mean, we all see it through the media, but I can assure you it will never match up to what it’s really like.
Kroo Bay is built on mounds of rubbish and the area is regularly flooded, during its rainy season. Here drains will block and allow putrid waters to rise, flooding homes, schools and alleyway. Already the ‘rivers’ are filled with 3-4ft of rubbish.
Today we saw pigs wander knee-high in stagnant pools of water, while human excrement floated on the surface- the same water is used to wash clothes and bathe in.
The Orthodox mission today was honoured to be invited by the Chief and lead around the area by the Chairman of the 20,000 strong community. Thanks to generous donations, the mission was able to give him and his committee funds to help hire vans and buy tools to begin cleaning the river in preparation for the rainy season."
