The Children’s and Youth Choir of Saints Cyril and Methodius church thrilled audiences in Cape Town during August with their incredible vocal talents.
They are an internationally-acclaimed youth choir from Thessalonika who travel the world giving concerts and participating in youth choir festivals and competitions. They are trained and sing under the baton of Choral Director, Dr Maria Emma Meligopoulou. She is the Founder and Musical Director of this renowned youth choir and is also a distinguished adjudicator for choral competitions in Europe.
On Sunday 18 August the choir attended the Liturgy Service at the Cathedral of Saint George and then they joined the Community for the Feast of the Theotokos lunch at the HCC. The choir gave a concert after lunch which brought this special day to a spectacular end.
The Choir of Saints Cyril and Methodius also held three public concerts in the city, including an impressive evening of church hymns and popular songs at the Bishop’s Chapel at Bishops Diocesan College in Rondebosch.
Their pure voices and the beautiful renditions of well-loved Greek songs plus an assortment of songs from around the world, including South Africa, had the audience transfixed. Their soulful singing and chanting of hymns and church music was so uplifting and inspiring.
They’re a fun fresh group of youngsters who really love what they do and it shows. Their performance was top class and the entire concert was suffused with a warm and happy atmosphere, despite the freezing night outside.
Maria Meligopoulou is an outstanding musician herself and she has brought a special spirit of universal enjoyment and appreciation to the choral works with her arrangements and choreography, to which the choir adds their own brand of magic.
