On Wednesday 27 August churches around South Africa celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Phanurius. Reverend Fr. Constantinos Kosmidis officiated at the service of the Holy Eucharist at the Church of St Nicholas in Durban KZN.
Saint Phanirius has been revered for 500 years up to the present by Orthodox Christians and each year on 27 August the faithful bake a sweet cake “Phanuropita” which are taken to the church for a blessing.
During work undertaken to restore the walls of the fortress of Rhodes, the workmen discovered the ruins of a beautiful church, under the flagstones of which they found many icons. The only one among them that was intact was an icon depicting a young soldier holding a Cross in his right hand. A lighted candle stood over the Cross, and the icon was framed by twelve scenes of his martyrdom. The local bishop Nilus (1355-69) was able to decipher the inscriptions: ‘Saint Phanurius’. When the governor of the island refused permission to restore the church, the devout bishop went to Constantinople where he received satisfaction. Saint Phanurius from that time on worked many miracles, especially finding lost people or animals. Reference: The Synaxarion volume six
