THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS, PARISH OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES - RWAMAGANA, RWANDA

On Friday, 14th September 2018, His Grace Innocentios Byakatonda, the Bishop of the Orthodox Diocese of Burundi and Rwanda, presided to the Divine Liturgy and he also conducted the Service of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the Parish of the Twelve Apostles located in Rwamagana Town, East Province of Rwanda. Many Orthodox Christians from all over Rwanda part of Diocese and chanters from Uganda attended to the solemn service.

The Feast readings are I Corinthians 1:18-24 [ The message of the Cross is foolishness to the world, but to Christians is the power of God] and John 19: 6-11, 13-20, 25-28, 30-35 [we read of the Crucifixion as we remember St. Helen's finding of the True Cross of Christ].

Doctor Antonios LIASKIS made the preaching and emphasized on the meaning of the great Feast of the Church and the history of the discovering and elevation of the Holy Cross of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.

Why is the message of the Cross...foolishness to unbelievers? Saint John Chrysostom answers that " it is a mark of them that perish not to recognize the things which lead to salvation." We who bear witness to Christ must not be discouraged when those outside of Him mock, for so did once even Paul himself. Being saved, present tense, refers to the process by which the Cross transforms us with the power of God.

To those who request a sign, the Church offers one; the Cross! The cross has to be adored, for wherever the sign may be, there Jesus will be. Since Christ is the power and wisdom of God the Father - the brightness of the Father's glory (Heb. 1:3), the substantial and perfect image of the invisible God - where He is, is the uncreated and saving grace of God. His cross restores man to immortality and stirs up desire for the things of heaven.
