Gungu is a central city of Bandundu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, lying 700 kms to the east of Kinshasa. It has an airport and a population of more than 60,000 residents, which together with the suburbs exceeds 100,000. Therefore, it is a place that could serve as a great missionary center for the whole area with a school and a dispensary. The Orthodox Church has had a lot of faithful in the city for years; among them is the Deputy Dean of the Orthodox University of the Congo, Mr. Theodoros Foumouantza. The faithful have been constantly asking and praying for the construction of a Holy Church. Finally, their prayers were heard, when the Deputy Dean donated two hectares of land to the Mission.
Immediately, the Orthodox Missionary Fraternity was asked to help in the construction of the church and a group of four donors from Thessaloniki undertook to pay the bulk of the required money. The construction started in April 2011 and went quite quickly. Currently, all external works, housing and frame mounting have finished and equipment of the interior comes next. By God’s grace, three residents of the city have already graduated from the Theological School of the Congo, thus providing the Mission in Gungu with workers and soon her own priest.
