An encouraging development is happening through the Orthodox Church in Nyeri, Kenya, for women’s empowerment. An organization called the Nyeri Deanery Mothers Union is making a way for women to use local resources to provide for their families and to support their parishes. This group provides opportunities for women to be advocates for one another in their local communities and merge their creativity and resources together to raise financial support. The Union has already started a beadwork project, a water reservoir project, and a project for buying utensils for their churches.
The latest project being undertaken by the Mothers Union involves rearing cattle. The project will provide several cows to be tended to by local women. This will allow them to sell commodities such as meat, milk, cheese, fertilizer, etc. They especially want to focus on dairy farming. Many of the women have experience working with animals, and it is expected that land will not be an issue to acquire.
To begin, the goal is to acquire 10 cows. They already have their first cow and first calf! The hope is that this project will provide jobs for women in Nyeri so that they are able to better provide for their families. It is also the hope that this initiative will create funds that will support local Orthodox ministries and churches, facilitating a more sustainable economic situation for the diocese.

May God be with these women who are working together to break through the challenges of life to provide for their families and the Body of Christ!
