Beloved Christians of our Archdiocese of Johannesburg and Pretoria,
As you are aware, the historic leader and past-president, Nelson Mandela, passed-away late last night.
With his struggles for freedom, equality and justice, his name became deeply associated with these divine gifts and he was deemed worthy to see this land enjoy these ideals that he believed in, and struggled for.
“Freedom requires virtue and daring”, says the poet. This virtue and this daring characterised the late leader. He displayed this, and this was universally recognised by all to the point that, when today we speak of freedom, equality and justice in any part of the world, the name of Mandela comes to the mind of any inhabitant of this planet.
Our Holy Archdiocese, sharing in the National Mourning, and at the same time promoting these values that Nelson Mandela struggled for, announces that on Sunday 8th December in all the Churches of our Jurisdiction , immediately after the Divine Liturgy, a Memorial Supplication will take place for the repose of the departed servant of God.
His Eminence the Metropolitan will celebrate the Memorial Supplication in the Holy Church of the ‘Meeting of the Lord in the Temple’, Saheti School.
All our Christian brethren are called to come together to pray that the Lord our God give rest to the soul of this great man, a man that proved ‘in word and deed’ that he was a man of God.
