This month the oldest parishioner of the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas of Japan, Ellie Mullinos, celebrated her 100th birthday, so today we had a party after the Hours and Readers Service (the parish priest, Fr Athanasius Akunda, was away on the Holy Mountain).

Elly had a tough life. She was born in Turkey in 1913, and at the age of 10 was forcibly removed in the ethnic cleansing that followed the Graeco-Turkish War. One of her grandchildren was killed in a road accident and one of her children was murdered.

Until about 4-5 years ago, when she was well into her 90s, she used to drive herself to church, but now she is dependent on others to bring her.
