LORD, I AM NOT WORTHY ... FROM THE GOSPEL OF SUNDAY - JULY 2, 2017
Matthew 8: 8
The centurion answered and said, " Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed."
Matthew 8: 13
Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour....
A centurion (v. 5) commanded 100 men in a Roman legion. The man is a Gentile (Luke 7: 3-5). Jesus is the Saviour of all; for Him ethnic and social distinctions are void. The centurion (v. 8-9) recognizes Jesus' authority, calling Him Lord. Although the centurion has authority over men, he understands that only Jesus has authority over disease. The centurion's phrase: "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof...", is frequently quoted in the liturgical texts of the Orthodox Church. It is an ideal expression of our deep unworthiness before Christ.
"...but according to His mercy He saves us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour...". (Titus 3: 5-6)
"...mais poussé par sa seul miséricorde, il nous a sauvé par le bain de la régénération et de la rénovation en Esprit Saint. Et cet Esprit, il l' a répandu sur nous à profusion, par Jésus Christ notre sauveur...". (Tite 3: 5-6).
" Egli [Dio] ci ha salvati mediante un lavacro di rigenerazione e di rinovamento nello Spirito Santo, effuso da lui su di noi abbondantemente per mezzo di Gesù Cristo..." (Tito 3: 5-6)
"... Yaradukijije, itabitewe n' ibyiza twaba twarakoze, ahubwo ibitewe n' impuhwe igira, idukirisha icyuhagiro dukesha kuvuka bwa kabiri no guhinduka abantu bashya muri Roho Mutagatifu. Kandi uwo Roho, yamudusakajemo ku bwa Yezu Kristu Umukiza wacu..." (Tito 3: 5-6)
