On Sunday 27 April, after the service of the Holy Eucharist at the Church of Saint George in East London, the Hellenic Community of East London and surrounding districts celebrated the Feast Day of their patron saint in true traditional “panayiriko”style.
His Eminence Archbishop Sergios and Mr Thomas Matsoukas, the Greek Consul in Cape Town, were the guests of honour at the occasion. Everyone was treated to the best souvla, loukoumades and other Greek delicacies that were generously offered and prepared by members of the community. Consul Matsoukas was presented with a gift by Fr. George to welcome him to the East London Hellenic Community and thanked him for sharing St George’s Feast Day with them. He also wished him for his name-day which was being celebrated today.
The highlight of the festival was the polished performance of traditional Greek dances by the youth of the community. In addition, there was also a one act Greek comedy by the well-known playwright Dimitris Psathas which was performed impeccably by a three-man cast.
Presvetera Despina was commended for taking on the responsibility of the Greek school and the Sunday School, in addition to assisting her husband with his ministry – and more especially for the positive influence she has on the children by instilling in them a love of the Greek language and a pride in their heritage and culture.
