The Patriarchate of Alexandria in November 2016 decided to “restore” the ancient order of deaconesses.
On Sunday 11 November 2018 in Sierra Leone ,Australian citizen Mary Adams, was appointed a Deaconess of the Orthodox Church by Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II .

I commend to you our sister Mary, who is a servant of the church which is at Sierra Leone; that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and that you help her in whatever matter she may have need of you; for she herself has also been a helper of many, and of myself as well."
