"Celebrating the life of His Grace Bishop Athanasios:
The Orthodox Church Diocese of Kisumu and all western Kenya, family, clergy, faithful and friends mourn the repose of their Bishop H.G. Dr. Athanasios Akunda, by birth name, Amos Masaba Akunda, Bishop Athanasios Akunda was born on 19/10/1970 at Ebukhubi, Luanda sub-county, Vihiga County. He was the first born son of his father Joseph Akunda and the late Dinah Ongoche.
At the age of 8 Bishop Athanasios became Orthodox following his parents’ conversion into orthodoxy. He studied primary and secondary and passed well. Upon completion of secondary school, he studied Theology at Makarios III seminary in Nairobi Kenya after which he joined the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology through OCMC scholarship to study a Master of Divinity. He later obtained Doctor of Theology Degree from UNISA State University of South Africa.
Amongst many other courses, Bishop Athanasios studied Diploma and post graduate Diploma in Education at India Institute of Education Management and Certificate of English as a foreign language at Cambridge Institute in Boston. In attainment of his goals, his zeal and passion to the church grew to high standards. He served many people, despite their race, culture, tribe, education, and denomination. He was the most humble Bishop the church has ever met.
On 24/11/2015 through the Holy Synod, he was elected the Bishop of the Holy Diocese of Kisumu, consecrated on 6/12/2015 and enthroned on 15/5/2016 which marked his 3 years in service. Though a short term, he did great things to his Diocese for the growth and development of the church.
The Bishop was a friend to many; the Sunday school children, the youth, the mothers, the fathers, and a spiritual father to all clergy. It is hard to believe that he is no more in this world but it is true to say he has left a mark, a remarkable legacy that won’t be forgotten by all through all ages. The souls he touched, the orphans and widows he helped, the church he preached the gospel of hope to, the office he served, the family and friends he had are all praying for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
You fought a good fight, you endured suffering and pain, you stood with hope even in hard times and now we pray that God put you in a place where there is no more suffering and pain. You will forever be remembered."
